A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” declared the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its role in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised persistent apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
